Year-round glacier training
The Hintertux glacier is the only outdoor resort in the world open 365 days a year. At the head of the Tux valley in Tirol, it offers a large ski area that suits both free-skiing and race training, and it’s a dependable, snow-sure base in every season.
It’s frequented by race teams and instructor associations from across Europe, and BASI use it as a base for end-of-season exams, so you’re training somewhere with real racing and coaching pedigree.
A typical training day
Getting up to the snow is part of the routine. You drive or take the bus up to the base station, then ride two separate gondolas up to the glacier base. Up there you’ll find a large self-service restaurant, a ski shop and a picnic room, it’s where you put your boots on and do your mobilisation work before skiing.
From there you either meet the coaches at the glacier base or head straight up on the final gondola to the training lanes, where the courses are already set. Hintertux has several training areas with a good variety of gradients, and some with real length to them, ideal for building both technique and race fitness.

Hintertux’s year-round snow makes it one of our most flexible venues. We’ve run ISIA Speed Test and Eurotest training here, as well as Masters training and bespoke camps for all levels.
Because the glacier skis every month of the year, dates are flexible, get in touch to arrange a group or join an existing one.
Getting there, staying & lift passes
Getting there. There’s one road up the Tux valley to the Hintertux base station. The nearest airport is Innsbruck, with a straightforward drive up the valley.
Where to stay. Plenty of small villages line the road up the valley, and we’ve based ourselves in many of them over the years. For absolute ease, stay in one of the hotels right at the base station; for better value, head a little way down the road, Vorderlanersbach is about as far down as we’d suggest.
Lift pass. Ski passes are bought at the base station.
