Race Fitness for the ISIA Speed Test: Why It Matters

Of the six TTPPEE factors, fitness is the one people most often dismiss: “I’m not running a marathon, it’s two runs.” But ISIA Speed Test fitness isn’t really about surviving one fast run. It’s about being fit enough to train, and that’s what quietly decides how much you improve before test day.

It’s about your tenth run, not your first

Almost anyone can ski one decent run while they’re fresh. Race fitness is about skiing your tenth run of the day as well as your first: holding the same clean technique and the same commitment when your legs are burning. GS asks you to bend the ski and hold pressure through the turn, repeatedly, and that takes real strength and endurance. When the tank runs dry, the turns get lazy, the edge stops gripping, and the time slips away on exactly the runs that should be your best.

Fitness is what lets you train

Here’s the part that matters most, and it’s easy to miss. The fitter you are, the more you get out of every training day. If you’re done after five runs, you’ve had five runs of learning; if you can keep skiing well for ten, you’ve two times the quality reps, and quality reps are how technique actually changes. Fitness doesn’t just help you on test day; it multiplies the value of every camp you do beforehand. Two instructors can attend the same week and leave with very different gains purely because one could keep training and the other couldn’t.

What kind of fitness? Legs first

You don’t need to be a marathon runner, and you don’t need a punishing gym habit, but you do need to know where the return is. For giant slalom, the single most valuable quality is leg strength. The research on alpine racing is consistent on this: leg strength correlates strongly with GS performance, because the sport keeps you in a crouched, loaded position and asks the legs to absorb the shock of every turn and drive the ski back out of it. It’s not just how much you can lift once; it’s eccentric and isometric strength, the ability to control load as the turn builds and to hold a strong position without collapsing, turn after turn.

Around that, a strong core and strong hips and glutes keep you stable and connected to the ski, and let you hold position when the forces spike. Aerobic fitness matters too, but for a specific reason: a decent aerobic base helps you cope with training at altitude and lets you keep training for longer before you fade. It’s an enabler of volume, not the thing that wins you the run. A powerful upper body can make your push out of the start a touch quicker, but that’s a marginal gain compared with getting the skiing right, so it’s low on the priority list.

On the how: strength built through compound movements, and through genuinely athletic and varied sport, carries over far better than isolated machine work in the gym. Movements that load the legs and core together, that train you to absorb and control force, and that mimic the angles and demands of skiing are what pay off on snow. We’re deliberately not going to hand you a set of target numbers to hit, because chasing an arbitrary figure is a good way to get injured. The aim is functional, robust strength you can rely on for a full day on the hill, not a personal best on a leg press.

Train smart: quality reps, not just more reps

How you spend your energy on a training day matters as much as how much of it you have. The high-energy, full-commitment runs (the ones where you’re really attacking the course) should come once you’re properly warmed up and while you’ve still got the physical and mental sharpness to do them well. There’s little value in hammering flat-out runs when you’re too tired to hold your best skiing; all you groove is bad habits, and the injury risk climbs.

When energy starts dropping to the point that it’s clearly hurting performance, the smart move isn’t to push through with more race runs; it’s to switch to drill-based work. Drills let you keep learning and refining at a lower physical cost, which is both safer and a better use of what’s left in the tank. Managing that shift well is part of what separates a productive day from a wasteful one.

How fit is “fit enough”?

There isn’t a single number, and we won’t pretend otherwise. The honest benchmark is simple: are you fit enough that fitness isn’t the thing limiting how much you can train? We’ve had people arrive, manage a handful of runs, and declare themselves too tired to continue. That’s admirable honesty, but their rate of improvement is slower than the person next to them doing double the runs. The goal isn’t blindly doing as many runs as physically possible; it’s doing as many good runs as you can before physical or mental fatigue becomes the limiting factor. Raise that ceiling and everything else (technique, tactics, confidence) gets more room to improve. If you never get there, fitness quietly becomes one of the reasons progress stalls.

The unglamorous multipliers: sleep, food and water

None of the above works without recovery, and this is the bit people skip. Sleep, proper fuelling and staying hydrated are not optional extras when you’re training hard at altitude; they’re what let you back up a good day with another one, and they have a direct effect on how sharp you feel over the clock. Turning up to a camp under-slept and under-fuelled wastes some of the fitness you did build. It also feeds straight into the mental side: tired, depleted skiers get rattled far more easily than rested ones. Look after the basics and you get more out of every other bit of work you do.

Don’t let fitness cap your progress

The point isn’t to add a punishing gym programme to your life. It’s to make sure fitness isn’t the thing capping how much you can train and improve. Arrive fit enough to make the most of every run, and every other factor (technical, tactical, the lot) improves faster as a result. Prioritise the legs, using compound movements rather than isolated machines: squats, lunges and step-downs, with an emphasis on controlling load (the eccentric phase) and on holding strong positions (isometric work), because that’s exactly what GS demands. Add core, hip and glute strength for stability, and keep some general endurance ticking over so you can train longer. Varied, athletic sport counts too. The standard you’re chasing rewards a body that can repeat good skiing all day, not a single big lift.

Do I need to be really aerobically fit?

As many good ones as you can before fatigue starts degrading them. The number itself varies hugely from person to person and isn’t the point; the point is the quality holds. Once tiredness is clearly costing you, switch to drills rather than grinding out sloppy race runs. Over a camp, the skier who can keep producing quality runs simply learns faster.
